Grand Marais Michigan 2018

Kathleen Mooney’s Independent Traveler Workshops – Grand Marais, Michigan

Grand Marais, Michigan is one of my favorite “end of the road” locations. http://www.grandmaraismichigan.com/  It seems like everything gets “distilled” and concentrated out at the end.  Grand Marais is at the eastern edge of the famed Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.  https://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/index.htm Waterfalls, lakes, harbors, streams, vast forests, sandhill cranes, driftwood, sand dunes and beach rocks… Beauty in every direction.  Add the history, culture, museums, and shipwrecks and you have inspiration enough to fill your artist’s soul.

We will be meeting at the same time as the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Festival – the Grand Marais Harbor will be full of bright colors and lots of activity!  I also recommend the Pictured Rocks Cruises out of Munising, Michigan – we can take the cruise together and you will find we can get 100’s of photos of the spectacular pictured rocks and several quick sketches.  https://www.picturedrocks.com/fares-schedule/

Grand Marais has hotels, motels, camping, VRBO cottages – a lot of housing options.  If you require more information on this just let me know.

We will catch lunch at local eateries or pack our own.  There is a real DINER in GM with fabulous food and books, a brew pub, snack shops, restaurants…

If we are a small group we will share rides -- in Grand Marais we can walk or bring your bike!

Phone signal and wi-fi are sometimes limited and are sometimes unreliable – for some people this is a plus and others find this frustrating.

Please dress for the weather – it can be all seasons in Michigan’s UP at any time!  The terrain is natural / ungroomed beaches, roads, and walking trails.  Sturdy footwear is IMPORTANT – have hiking shoes and boots to protect your feet and ankles. It is so disappointing to miss all that beauty because you are not prepared.  I use a hiking stick to help keep my footing and assist with walking.   Sunscreen, sun protection, rainwear, bug dope, fly swatter, umbrella, TP, baby wipes, plastic bag for trash, a folding chair, water bottles, your plein air painting kit: Bring everything you need to be happy in the great outdoors – and yet “somewhat” portable…

I will be teaching “Painting the Iconic Landscape”.  I happily paint from realism to full non-representational abstract mode – and will be happy to accommodate your preference.

Class runs 10-4 each day with a break for lunch.  I give brief demos on capturing this iconic landscape painting plein aire (outside).  For media I recommend watercolors with some gesso and perhaps a little acrylic.  There will be tours included in the workshop to explore scenic locations and local lore.  This workshop is limited to 12 students – this allows for an easy relaxing pace and attention.

The dates for 2018 are July 20 – July 22 inclusive – this gives 3 full days of painting, tours and enjoying Grand Marais and Pictured Rocks.  Look for information on this and my other Independent Traveler Workshops on my website - http://www.kathleenmooney.com/Instruction.html

These workshops are ideally suited for the independent traveler.  You make your own arrangements for transportation, lodging and meals.  Simply show up for your workshop sessions and be free to enjoy the rest of your time as you wish.  Flexibility, relaxation and peacefulness are the goal – supporting a quality painting experience.

Reserve your spot in the “Painting the Iconic Landscape” workshop today.  I look forward to sharing the magic and beauty of Grand Marais with you!
